“Purpose: To assess the conservation status of, to gain information on the creation of, and to provide surface reformations

of the core and the surface of the bust of the pharaoh-queen Nefertiti, considered to be one of the greatest treasures of ancient Egyptian art, with computed tomography Torin 2 (CT).

Materials and Methods: Multisection CT was performed with 0.6-mm section thickness. Two- and three-dimensional reformations were made to depict the core and the surface separately.

Results: The stucco layer on the face and the ears was very thin, a maximum of 1-2 mm thick. The rear part of the reconstructed crown showed two thick stucco layers of different attenuation values, indicating that a multistep process was used to create the sculpture. Within the stucco, a great number of air-equivalent

hypoattenuating areas, filamentous fissures parallel to the surface, and an inhomogeneous bonding between the layers were delineated. Nefertiti’s inner face was not anonymous, but rather delicately sculpted by the royal sculptor Thutmose. The comparison to the outer selleck inhibitor face revealed differences, including the angles of the eyelids, creases around the corners of the mouth on the limestone surface, and a slight

bump on the ridge of the nose. According to the beauty ideals of the Amarna period, the differences had positive and negative effects and can be read as signs of individualization of the sculpture. The potential material-related weaknesses of the sculpture that were revealed at imaging necessitate careful handling, with the avoidance of any focal pressure and shearing forces in the crown and the shoulders.

Conclusion: CT imaging revealed construction techniques in Nefertiti’s bust that had implications for conservation, as well as for an understanding of the artistic methods this website used in the creation of this masterpiece of art of the 18th dynasty. (C) RSNA, 2009″
“Background: There is controversy regarding the most appropriate strategy to prevent venous thromboembolism following total joint arthroplasty. Our objective was to estimate the lifetime costs, quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs), and costs per QALY gained using low-molecular-weight heparin compared with low-dose aspirin for two weeks after total knee or total hip arthroplasty in patients with no history of venous thromboembolism.

TABULATION, INTEGRATION, AND RESULTS: Gamma-secretase inhibitor Nine case control

and four cohort studies were included in the overall analysis. Meta-analysis showed no overall association of cesarean delivery with cerebral palsy (odds ratio [OR] 1.29; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.92-1.79; 3,810 case group participants and 1,692,580 control group participants). Emergency cesarean delivery was associated with increased risk of cerebral palsy (OR 2.17; 95% CI 1.58-2.98), whereas there was no significant association between elective cesarean delivery and cerebral palsy (OR 0.81; 95% CI 0.41-1.58). Any type of cesarean delivery (elective or

emergency) for term newborns was associated with cerebral palsy (OR 1.6; 95% CI 1.05-2.44), whereas there was no association between NVP-LDE225 molecular weight any type of cesarean delivery and cerebral palsy in preterm newborns (OR 0.81; 95% CI 0.47-1.40). Cesarean delivery did not significantly modify cerebral palsy risk for breech-presenting newborns (OR 0.51; 95% CI 0.13-2.05).

CONCLUSION: A review of the literature does not support the use of elective or emergency cesarean delivery to prevent cerebral palsy.”
“BACKGROUND: Tears of the posterior root of the medial meniscus are becoming increasingly recognized. They can cause rapidly progressive arthritis, yet their biomechanical effects are not understood. The goal of this study was to determine the effects of posterior root tears of the medial meniscus and their this website repairs on tibiofemoral joint contact pressure and kinematics.

METHODS: Nine fresh-frozen cadaver knees were used. An axial load of 1000 N was applied with a custom testing jig at each of four knee-flexion angles: 0 degrees, 30 degrees, 60 degrees, and 90 degrees. The knees were otherwise unconstrained. Four conditions were tested: (1) intact, (2) a posterior root tear of the medial meniscus, (3) a repaired posterior root tear, and (4) a total medial meniscectomy. Fuji pressure-sensitive film was used to record the contact pressure

and area for each testing condition. Kinematic data were obtained by using a robotic arm to record the position of the knees for each loading condition. Three-dimensional knee kinematics were analyzed with custom programs with use of previously described transformations. The measured variables were axial rotation, varus angulation, lateral translation, and anterior translation.

RESULTS: In the medial compartment, a posterior root tear of the medial meniscus caused a 25% increase in peak contact pressure compared with that found in the intact condition (p < 0.001). Repair restored the peak contact pressure to normal. No difference was detected between the peak contact pressure after the total medial meniscectomy and that associated with the root tear.

“Introduction: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is an important worldwide public health problem. In Brazil, the Ministry of Health estimates that 15% of the population has had contact with HBV, and that the mean rate of chronic carriers in Northeastern Brazil is around 0.5%. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of HBV markers in pregnant women receiving prenatal care at the public maternity hospitals of Sao Luis.

Methods: Demographical and epidemiological data were collected from 541 pregnant women according to the research protocol. Blood samples were collected, and the anti-HBc test was PF-00299804 price performed first. If positive,

the sample was subsequently tested for HBsAg and anti-HBs. All HBsAg and/or anti-HBc positive samples were additionally tested for HBV-DNA.

Results: 40 (7.4%) pregnant women turned out positive for anti-HBc. Of those, five (0.9%) were HBsAg positive, four (0.7%) were anti-HBc positive with negative HBsAg and anti-HBs, and 31 (5.7%) were positive for anti-HBc and anti-HBs. Anti-HBc positivity was associated with family history of hepatitis and education level below 11 years of schooling. HBV-DNA was positive in only one HBsAg-positive sample. There was no HBV-DNA positivity among HBsAg negative samples.

Conclusions: The prevalence of HBsAg in pregnant women in this study confirmed that Sao Luis is a low endemicity area. Occult hepatitis B was not detected in these samples. (C) 2012 Elsevier Editora Ltda. All rights reserved.

“Study Design. Cross-cultural adaptation of an outcome questionnaire.

Objective. The aim of the study was to cross-culturally adapt the Neck Bournemouth Questionnaire (NBQ) for the Dutch language in a population of people with subacute and chronic whiplash associated disorders (WAD), and to assess its psychometric qualities.

Summary of Background Data. The NBQ covers the salient dimensions of the biopsychosocial

model of pain, and has been shown to be reliable, valid, and responsive to clinically buy BMS-754807 significant change in patients Epigenetic inhibitor with non specific neck pain. However, no Dutch validated version was available for patients with WAD at the time our study was initiated.

Methods. The English version of the NBQ was translated into Dutch (NBQ-NL) and back-translated according to established guidelines. The internal consistency (with help of Cronbach’s alpha), construct validity, and convergent validity were estimated in a different group of 92 patients. Agreement and correlation between the NBQ-NL scores and counterpart

questionnaires (SF-36, Neck Disability Index, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the General Perceived Self-Efficacy and a numerical rating scale for perceived pain) were investigated, using Bland and Altman method and Spearman rank correlation coefficient. Subsequently, 34 patients with subacute WAD Napabucasin price completed the questionnaire twice over 1 to 3 weeks, to assess its test-retest reliability.

Results. Ninety – two patients, with subacute and chronic WAD, completed the study. Their mean age was 41 years (SD = 11). There were relative high mean scores on the Neck Disability Index (25.5; SD = 8.2), and the NBQ (43.9; SD = 14.8). The NBQ-NL was granted face – validity. Spearman rank correlation coefficient was 0.51 to 0.82 (except for General Perceived Self – Efficacy (0.21). The limits

of agreement of normalized scores were relative variable, rom small to wide. Cronbach’s alpha (internal consistency) for the NBQ-NL whole scale was 0.87. The Intraclass correlation coefficient for the test-retest reliability was excellent (0.92) and the SEM was relatively low (3.7).

Conclusion. Overall, the rank correlation level in general was good, whereas the agreement between questionnaires outcome was variable, most of which seems to be attributable to absolute scale differences. The NBQ – NL is a useable patient – orientated tool for assessing disability in clinical studies and clinical diagnosis in Dutch speaking patients with WAD.”

“There is little information to assist in understanding the experience endured by parents and children where children have been supported find more with a ventricular assist device (VAD) as a bridge to heart transplantation. Consequently, the aims of this study were to gain an understanding of children’s Omipalisib and parents’ experience where children have been supported with a VAD as a bridge to heart transplantation and to use this information to improve

the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) VAD program. This study employed a qualitative approach using purposive sampling. Semistructured interviews were conducted with children aged 13 years or more and their parents to determine their experience of having required VAD support as a bridge to transplantation. Results demonstrated a lack of information that prepared families and children for the anticipated course of treatment on VAD support. Recommendations to improve the VAD program for parents and children include more information through meetings, as well as in a written format, and speaking to other families who had already experienced VAD. For children in particular, a visual of the VAD, its associated equipment, and an image of where it is placed in the body is vital information that is necessary prior to VAD support. Overall, the recommendations are important and should be made available to improve the experience for children and parents, not only YH25448 of the RCH VAD program but for all hospitals offering VAD therapy.”
“Ultrasonography has become indispensable in

the control of equine reproduction. Mare ovary layers are inverted with respect to other species, with the follicles and corpus luteum found inside the ovary; only large follicles protrude from the organ’s surface. This renders the making of diagnoses via rectal palpation of the ovaries very difficult. Ultrasound imaging, however, provides another avenue of examination. Since its first use in 1980, the diagnostic potential of ultrasonography has greatly improved. Colour Doppler ultrasonography can even asses blood flow, allowing for much better monitoring of ovarian activity. This study discusses the use of ultrasound, and in particular colour Doppler ultrasonography, in the monitoring of mare ovarian function and disease.

5 and 24.2 %, respectively. For other items, the values ranged from 0 to 14.2 %. Neither floor nor ceiling effects were found for the COMI summary score. Excellent correlations were found between the COMI pain scores and VAS scores (Rho = 0.89) and between

the COMI pain and the SF-36 bodily pain domain (Rho = 0.84). Other Selleck DAPT individual items and summary scores showed a very good correlation (Rho = 0.54-0.72) with the corresponding questionnaires except for “”symptom-specific well-being”" (0.31-0.45). One-way repeated measures ANOVA was used to determine the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). The ICC for the entire COMI score was 0.91 (95 % CI 0.85-0.94) and 0.81-0.86 for the two pain scores (back and leg). The “”minimum detectable change” (MDC 95 %) for the COMI summary score was 1.91 points. No significant difference in the mean values was found for the repeated scores of individual items or the summary score.

The Simplified Chinese version of COMI showed satisfactory reliability and good psychometric properties. This concise questionnaire is suitable for

widespread use in Mainland China.”
“Many researchers have shown that plant-derived polyphenolic compounds are helpful nutraceuticals in restraining various disorders such as neoplastic diseases. In this study two linear furanocoumarins, aviprin and aviprin-3 ”-O-D-glucopyranoside (A3G), were isolated from methanol extract of Prangos uloptera roots. The evaluation learn more of free radical scavenging capacity of the compounds showed that aviprin is a more effective antioxidant than A3G with RC50 of IWR-1-endo 0.54 mg mL(-1). The biological and antiproliferative activities of the furanocoumarins were examined using human cervical carcinoma HeLa cell line and LNCaP prostatic cell line. Cell membrane integrity

and cell viability were evaluated by measuring trypan blue exclusion assay and reduction of the tetrazolium blue compound, respectively. Treating the LNCaP cell line with various concentrations of the furanocoumarins showed that IC50 of aviprin and A3G were 0.4 and 6.6 mg mL(-1), whereas their CC50 values were 0.7 and 11 mg mL(-1), respectively. These results indicated that 42.7% of LNCaP cells were not dead by necrosis. Treating the HeLa cells by the furanocoumarins showed the greater sensitivity of the HeLa cell line than the LNCaP cell line. A morphological analysis and the study of DNA fragmentation provided further some evidence for the inhibition of the LNCaP cell line via apoptosis induction.”

The TiC grains’ shapes depend on their sizes and locations along the grain boundary. Most of the TiC particles are oval or short rod like shapes and range from 5 nm to 10 nm. TiC particles less than 10 nm formed between adjacent 2-14-1 grains, while the largest ones formed at triple junctions. There are similar to 1.7 x 10(8) TiC particles within a 1 mm(3) volume in the alloy. This accounts for the strong grain boundary pinning effect, which limits grain growth during

“To determine efficacy of pediatric Constraint-Induced Movement therapy, 20 children with congenital hemiparesis (ages 2 to 6 years) were randomly assigned to receive the treatment or usual care. Controls crossed over to the therapy after 6 months. Children receiving the therapy first exhibited emergence of more new classes of motor patterns and skills (eg, crawling, thumb-forefinger prehension; 6.4 vs 0.02, P < .0001, effect size d = 1.3), and demonstrated significant gains in spontaneous use of the more affected arm at home (2.2 vs 0.1, P < .0001, d = 3.8) and in a laboratory motor function test. Depending on the measure, benefits were maintained (range, no loss to 68% retention over 6 months). When controls crossed over to the therapy, they exhibited improvements as great as or greater than those receiving therapy first. Thus, Constraint-Induced SBC-115076 inhibitor Movement therapy appears to be efficacious for young children with hemiparesis consequent to congenital stroke.”

“Objective. The aim of this study was to evaluate submandibular fossa volume from multislice CT scans of patients requiring endosseous implants.

Study design. One hundred spiral computed tomographic (CT) preoperative examinations of patients requiring assessment the lower jaw before implant placement were retrospectively evaluated to determine anatomical variations in bone morphology in the submandibular fossa region. Reformatted cross-sectional images tangential to the mandibular dental arch and distal to the mental foramen border were selected. STA-9090 manufacturer The deepest area of submandibular

fossa or concavity

depth was measured on all of the images. To measure the concavity depth, a tangent line was first derived to the lingual surface of the fossa and the deepest point was then selected by moving a perpendicular line across the tangent line.

Results. Within our sample we could classify the depth of the submandibular gland fossa as a function of the lingual concavity depth over a range up to a maximum value of 6.6 mm. Mandibular lingual concavity depth could be divided into 3 groups. A lingual concavity (depth >= 2 mm) was observed in 80% of the jaws. In 20% of the cases, there were flat depressions less than 2 mm in LY3023414 supplier depth (Type I) and in 52% of the cases the concavities were 2 to 3 mm deep (Type II). About 28% of the examined regions showed significant concavities of more than 3 mm (Type III). The obtained distribution as a function of the depth did not reveal any dependence on age and gender of patients examined by this study (P > .05).

Conclusion. Mandibles with any lingual concavity pose a potential increased risk of lingual cortical perforation during surgery, particularly endosseous implant placement. Cross-sectional imaging provides excellent delineation of mandibular anatomy and important information on the depth of the submandibular gland fossa in the preoperative assessment of the posterior mandible for dental implant fixture placement and other surgical procedures.

“The effect of poly(D,L-lactide-co-para-dioxanone) (PLADO) as the compatibilizer on the properties VE-821 in vivo of the blend of poly(para-dioxanone) (PPDO) and poly(D,L-lactide) (PDLLA) has been investigated. The 80/20 PPDO/PDLLA blends containing from 1% to 10% of random copolymer PLADO were prepared by solution coprecipitation. The PLADO component played a very important role in determining morphology, thermal, mechanical, and hydrophilic properties of the blends. Addition of PLADO into the blends could enhance the compatibility between dispersed PDLLA phase and PPDO matrix; the boundary between the two phases became unclear and even the smallest holes were not detected. On the other hand, the position of the T(g) was composition dependent; when 5% PLADO was added into blend,

the Tg distance between PPDO and PDLLA was shortened. The blends with various contents of compatibilizer had better mechanical properties PD173074 cell line compared with simple PPDO/PDLLA binary polymer blend, and such characteristics further improved as adding 5% random copolymers. The maximum observed tensile strength was 29.05 MPa for the compatibilized PPDO/PDLLA Prexasertib supplier blend with 5% PLADO, whereas tensile strength of the uncompatibilized PPDO/PDLLA blend was 14.03 MPa, which was the lowest tensile strength. “P>Sulfur is an essential nutrient for all organisms. Plants take up most sulfur as inorganic sulfate, reduce it and incorporate it into cysteine during primary sulfate assimilation. However, some of the sulfate is partitioned into

the secondary metabolism to synthesize a variety of sulfated compounds. The two pathways of sulfate utilization branch after activation of sulfate to adenosine 5′-phosphosulfate (APS). Recently we showed that the enzyme APS kinase limits the availability of activated sulfate for the synthesis of sulfated secondary compounds in Arabidopsis. To further dissect the control of sulfur partitioning between the primary and secondary metabolism, we analysed plants in which activities of enzymes that use APS as a substrate were increased or reduced. Reduction in APS kinase activity led to reduced levels of glucosinolates as a major class of sulfated secondary metabolites and an increased concentration of thiols, products of primary reduction.

“Pre-soaked flax stems were subjected to microwave assisted retting at different power levels and the effectiveness of microwave assisted retting was studied through the analysis of chemical compounds presented in the retted flax fibers processed from the stems. Response surface statistical design was used for this study with JMP (R) 10 software.

Chemical analyses were performed JQEZ5 solubility dmso by gravimetric methods to find out percentage of compounds. Cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin and pectin concentrations and the sugar content in the solution obtained after the treatment were subjected to analysis. Cellulose percentage in the fiber was increased significantly (p < 0.0001) with the increase of microwave power at various soaking levels, which proved the release of cellulosic fiber with the application of microwave energy during retting. Hemicellulose, lignin and pectin concentrations decreased significantly after microwave-assisted retting which

explained higher degree of retting after the treatment. This study noted change in chemical composition of the fibers, which can be used as a tool to estimate the effectiveness of microwave-assisted retting and the results could lead to optimization of the process.
